Using Outpost

Desktop App

Outpost has a native desktop client for Windows, macOS, and Linux built with Electron — the same web client, wrapped so you get a real app instead of a browser tab, with a bookmark list for belonging to multiple Outpost servers at once.

Installing

Grab the right installer for your OS from the download page. Windows and Linux installers auto-update in place afterward; macOS currently doesn't (see below), so re-download periodically.

You will very likely see an OS warning on first launch. Outpost's installers are unsigned — no paid Apple Developer membership, no Windows code-signing certificate. This is a known, honest limitation of a personal open-source project, not a broken or malicious build (the full source is public and CI builds it in the open). See the download page for the exact workaround per OS, or the support page if you'd like to help change it.

Multiple servers, one app

Since each Outpost server is an independent community with its own accounts (see Getting Started), the desktop app keeps a bookmark list of instance addresses you belong to, so switching between them doesn't mean re-typing a URL every time.

Themes

The client ships with four built-in themes, including the default "Signal Fire" look (warm ember on deep slate — the same palette this site uses) — pick whichever fits your setup from your user settings.
